The ACT Verbal Analogies can be used as a stand-alone test or as part of a general intelligence assessment (see ACT General Intelligence). The ACT Figure Series is an adaptive test which has received a positive evaluation from the COTAN.

Adaptive testing

For traditional tests, it is assumed that all questions are equally difficult. For adaptive tests, we conducted research to determine how difficult each individual question is. Every candidate is presented with different items, depending on their level. Simply put, if a candidate gets a question wrong, the next question will be easier; if they get a question right, the next question will be more difficult. This method makes it possible to assess the candidate's level as they complete the test. It ensures that candidates with a lower level are not presented with questions that are too difficult for them. Likewise, high-level candidates are not shown questions that are too easy. The benefit of this approach is that it lets us assess a candidate's level faster and more accurately.

In practice, it means that every candidate receives a different test. The ACT Figure Series currently consists of over two hundred questions and our system consistently selects the most appropriate questions for a specific candidate. Once a candidate's level has been measured with sufficient reliability, the subtest will end. The candidate is given the opportunity to take a short break before continuing with the next subtest.

Application

The ACT Verbal Analogies can be utilised during selection or consultancy procedures. It is particularly relevant for positions that require verbal and/or written reasoning skills, such as positions that call for extensive verbal formulation and the ability to distil the essence of verbal information.

Assignments

The ACT Verbal Analogies asks candidates to choose two words (out of a total of six) that form an analogy together with the two words that are given.

Reporting

The standard report of the ACT Verbal Analogies contains an IQ score and compares the candidate's score to the scores of various standard groups: secondary vocational education, tertiary vocational education, higher education/bachelor's and university education/master's. It is also possible to generate a custom report without an IQ score and/or with one or more specific standard groups. View the full sample report via the link under Quick Facts.
